Keele University supporting local businesses to realise their Research, Development and Innovation ambitions.

The Moving Ahead programme transformed Keele University’s early research-led initiative into a flexible, outcome-driven framework for real-world innovation. By working closely with a cohort of local, innovation-ready businesses, the project helped shape and deliver 12 detailed funding bids, supporting the adoption of new technologies and the creation of sustainable growth strategies.

The project delivers over these key areas:

12 innovation funding bids developed and submitted
Businesses supported to adopt new technologies and sustainable practices
Research collaborations established between Keele University and local SMEs
Networking and peer-to-peer learning events delivered across multiple sectors
Businesses engaged in innovation workshops and knowledge exchange
Collaborative visits and expert sessions held with Keele University academics
Local entrepreneurial ecosystem strengthened through mentoring

Connecting Businesses, Researchers and Ideas

Through close collaboration with Keele University academics, participating companies gained access to world-class research expertise, technical insight, and creative problem-solving. This partnership approach gave businesses the confidence and capability to take bold steps forward — from product development and process improvement to expanding their innovation capacity.

Beyond individual business support, Moving Ahead established the Newcastle-under-Lyme Innovation Network — a community that connected enterprises, researchers, and sector leaders. Through events, peer-to-peer learning and collaborative projects, the network fostered a stronger culture of innovation across the borough and left a lasting legacy of shared knowledge, ambition, and collaboration.
